Raven Rose - Our New German Shepherd Puppy

Well this blog has been seriously neglected. I think it's time to start writing again. Unfortunately it is going to start on a sad note, but I promise it will end with a puppy!

We lost our 11 1/2 year old German Shepherd, Emily Rose, right before Christmas. She was the sweetest and most beautiful dog. It was the most heartbreaking thing I have ever experienced. She ended up having some kind of circulatory issue where she wasn't getting enough oxygen. Her back legs had also started failing over the last year. We believe she may of had Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). It is a chronic, progressive, degenerative disease of the spinal cord. As the disease progresses, hind-limb weakness occurs, leading to an inability to stand and then complete hind-limb paralysis. It was so sad to watch my usually hyper and happy dog not be able to get up on her own anymore. We covered our house in carpets and bought some dog booties, which were awesome during her final months with helping her get up off the hardwood floors and get around the house. I am sure the DM would of eventually taken her, but then she developed the odd oxygen issue that the vet said there was no cure for and we just knew it was time to say our goodbyes. We had her cremated and bought a beautiful box with her picture on it and she sits with us every night in our living room watching us from the cozy fireplace.

When she was gone, our house felt so empty. You don't realize how much you rely on your little shadow following you around the house, or how much of your day's routine involved your furbaby. We wanted to wait a year so that we could vacation and do a little traveling without having to make arrangements for dog care. Well, we didn't make it. We found out in March of this year there was the possibility of a litter that was related to our Emily and we knew it was fate.

On May 5th our little Raven Rose was born! I feel like I got a little part of my Emily and a little part of my heart back. She has big shoes to fill because Emily left a huge hole in my heart and can never be replaced. We gave her the same middle name as Emily in honor of her. We are weird dog people like that and give our dogs middle names LOL!

Raven is so smart and so sweet! We brought her home at 8 weeks and she immediately took over our lives and hearts. Travel is over-rated, right? We will get to that when we retire! Plus if we do go away, my parent's are more than willing to dog sit for us. Raven is in love with her big "brother" Ty that they own. He is actually a distant cousin to her. So without further ado...here is Raven Rose from 8 weeks to the most current, 5 months.
